Why Top Recruiters Are Almost NEVER Top Earners
Last week, I had a great conversation with a couple of top earners and friends of mine Whit and Cari who are creating a fast growing network marketing business.
They are actually part of a small elite group of top producers, they are part of the 7-Figure Earner INVICTUS leadership of Elite Marketing Pro and have taken their business building efforts online to supplement the success they’ve had offline.
During our discussion I asked about their background and how they built their downline organization - including their building philosophy. That is, what type of people they recruit, how do they train new people, the timing of promotions they runs, etc. I was finding myself in total agreement with everything they are doing to build their business.
Who would have thought?
I’m a purist when it comes to ONLINE recruiting! But was excited and intrigued with how a top income earner in network marketing built their business OFFLINE!
In fact, many of the things I hated about “Old School” building in network marketing, they didn’t like either!
To my surprise I had found my offline soul-mate. 🙂
They didn’t believe in making a list of 100 closest friends and family to pitching an opportunity.
They like to spend time with their wonderful kids and didn’t like having to hunt the malls to prospect anyone with a “warm body temp.”
As they said, “If I’m spending time with my kids, I want my full attention to be on my kids.”
What prompted this conversation was they had read a post online by a network marketing trainer titled, “Everyone IS your Prospect.”
They quite frankly got furious when they saw that post. 🙁
With emotion, I had not seen in them before, they said, “Everyone is NOT Your Prospect!" “Being someone we don’t know with a pulse is not qualification enough.”
After that statement we did a high 5 and I told them “They are preaching to the choir!”
Understanding exactly what they are thinking, I then followed up with…
"That's Why Top Recruiters are Almost NEVER the Top Earners”
The response, “Exactly!”
We were so telepathically in tune! That said I know for some of you reading this right now, this conversation might not make total sense for a few reasons.
First, it’s safe to say that we just broke commandments #1 & #2 of the "old school" bible.
- Make a list of 100 of your closest friends and family and don’t prejudge anyone
- Everyone is a prospect so prospect everyone that comes within 3-feet of you (e.g. the 3 foot rule)
In fact, I’ve become so devoted to not using “old school”, my family has NO IDEA what my business is doing, what opportunity I’m involved with or what products I sell.
As far as they are concerned, I’m probably a soap pusher (not). What I’ve really done is fired my boss, gone full time in my business, and quite franking don’t care what they think because I don’t need them in my business.
However, the more subtle part of this discussion has to do with the connection between “Everyone is NOT Your Prospect” and “Top Recruiters are Almost Never the Top Earners”…
What I have learned is, the biggest earners in the network marketing space were NOT the top recruiters in their company, because a legitimate company doesn’t pay you to recruit people.
They pay you to produce volume (e.g. product sales) and teach others to do the same.
So what TOP EARNERS in companies have figured out is they need to grow a big organization IN DEPTH, NOT just in WIDTH… and those reps in depth need to produce volume (e.g. be quality leaders).
The real secret of building a stable 6- and 7-figure business in network marketing is to have greater emphasis on QUALITY over QUANTITY.
How to Make 6 and 7-Figures By Recruiting FEWER People
A good friend of mine, Rick, who earns 7-figures in his network marketing business, told me he only sponsored 12 people into his business, yet he has an international organization of thousands which stretches across, North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
And Whit and Cari have built a fast growing multiple 6-figure business in less than 2 years having only sponsored a dozen people into their business.
TOP RECRUITERS, like a friend of mine in Vegas, on the other hand are SO GOOD at recruiting people,
a. they spend the majority of their time recruiting, because that’s what they are good at,
b. most people they sponsor are not sponsoring ‘monsters’ like them so there’s no duplication, therefore no depth is created, and
c. there is usually little emphasis on product volume, because there is so much emphasis on recruiting.
The big one here is b), because let’s face it — most people suck at being entrepreneurs and no matter how much you try to motivate, train or love on them, 90% of people won’t ever do anything significant in their business.
Now, can top recruiters also be top earners? Absolutely but you’ll find that top earners tend to focus more on training & building leaders.
That’s the reason why Whit and Cari didn’t bother making that big list of 100 to pitch their opportunity or recruit everyone they meet at the mall, because they knows the majority of them won’t make good business builders!
So what do they do?
They are very selective, qualify people rather than recruit them, and if they TRULY believe someone is a good fit, they invest time in them and invite them to look at their business.
The truth is, most people can and will make great customers! In fact, they actually do make a list of 100, but that list is for customers and not business builders, unless they go through a very specific qualification process.
And frankly, that’s how I build my business, except instead of doing 1-on-1 conversations to qualify someone; my qualification process is actually automated online using something called "attraction marketing."
How To Automatically Get a Steady Stream of HIGHLY Qualified "Entrepreneur Minded" Prospects
Now before I explain how this works, I just want to share with you what "attraction marketing" is NOT!
Attraction marketing is not spamming people on social media with private messages and posting your sign up link on people’s News Feed. I really hate that and if you’re currently doing that, please KNOCK IT OFF!
I can’t tell you how many folks in network marketing think they are doing "attraction marketing" or Internet marketing, by sending dozens or hundreds of private messages to strangers per day.
"Attraction marketing" is a completely passive activity (i.e. you aren’t messaging anyone). People actually send YOU their contact information, so they can learn more about your product or opportunity.
In some cases, it’s your opportunity and in other cases, it’s a product.
But here’s a little know truth, just because someone shows an interest in your business, doesn’t mean you’re going to sponsor them or even want to sponsor them. They need to demonstrate that they are a good fit in your business and this is done using something we call in the online world a “funnel.”
A “funnel” is a series of short steps, designed to replace the 1-on-1 interaction you normally have with a prospect to qualify them.
The problem with doing it offline is, if you are "qualifying" people, you better be a person who can command a certain level of respect.
If you are like Whit and Cari who are confident, well-spoken and successful in life, you’re off to a great start and will likely have good success.
If You are Broke, Shy & Scared… Quite Frankly You’re Screwed Building Offline
When you’re on online, it’s a whole different situation because a prospect requests information from you about a product or opportunity, because you already have posture. They came to you and have already told you they are interested in what you have.
In fact, most likely they are super impressed by the fact they found you online and want to know how you did it!
I generate dozens of prospects every day for my business, yet only a small fraction of them qualify to be leaders in my business.
The majority become customers, which is great, because they pay for my ad costs and overhead.

More and more top earners are taking advantage of “attraction marketing.”
Many top networkers already have a massive online presence.
And you know how the saying goes…
“If you want something, find someone who has what you want, do what they do and you’ll get what they got”
