I remember the day I first got started in network marketing…
During the group presentation I was told something that troubled me then and did for years to come…
The meeting was a large group gathering in a hotel focused on training.
It was held by a successful distributor in my upline, a wealthy CPA who had just retired full time into his network marketing business because he was making over million dollars a year.
A highly successful distributor with huge knowledge on how to build a business, or so I thought.
But as the meeting went on I became frustrated and extremely disappointed.
What happened well he stood in front of a whiteboard as spent his time doing what I later understood as “RAH-RAH” training that is mostly “fluff.”
My frustration was overwhelming because I was looking for a teacher and he didn’t teach us anything about strategy or skill sets I could use to grow my business.
All he kept saying was…
- “This business, it’s not selling, it’s sharing.”
- “You’re simply ‘sharing’ the business with people.”
- “You don’t need to sell; you just need to share these meetings with more people.”
Being from a military background his statements didn’t make sense…

As a military aviator I knew getting an airplane off the ground was not “lucky” it took specific skill. Effectively flying an airplane was not luck, you had to go to school and get a degree, then to flight training, and then to advanced flight training before you were ever allowed to solo.
You had to work really hard at learning the skills or you could die.
It wasn’t easy.
The simple fact is no matter what profession you’re in, I’m sure you’ll agree that…

I was a complete novice back then but knew my upline’s path couldn’t have been easy…and his success definitely wasn’t luck.
I struggled in that network marketing experience and after being recalled back into the Air Force place this dream on hold, but remembered the struggle.
After leaving the Air Force I joined three other network marketing companies who also only taught RAH-RAH training and no skills – and again I struggled.
I remembered the years of skill development in the Air Force and wanted to know how to build a business step-by-step, so I search for a solution.
My frustration with the lack of answers in the “old school” network marketing training eventually led me to ask where I could find an alternative, and a network marketing mentor who used the Internet to build large teams…
This led me to set of strategies, called “attraction marketing.
Not only did it give me strategies, attraction marketing solved the single biggest problem in my network marketing business - the lack of new qualified prospects for my business.
If fact I was able to find them, with a predictable approach, and I didn’t have to bug friends and family, do endless cold calls, or hunt the malls anymore.

And from these mentors I learned success in network marketing isn’t about luck, or chance, or any roll of the dice.
It’s strategic, skill based and can be done in a predictable way – that is doing the right things in the right sequence, to achieve a specific result.

Basically, when these 5 things are done in the right order, they create “A Money Making Machine” - which allows you to recruit network marketers online without leaving your home.
Now, having been there I know that sounds a like hype, so let me prove it…
Network marketing is like any other profession, you need to learn skills. And you need to treat what you are learning with the exact same seriousness that a pilot has when flying into combat.
So what is first…
A strategy is a series of specific steps that enable you to achieve a specific goal.
In other words you can draw these steps on a piece of paper or a whiteboard and map out how you’re going to achieve your goal.
If you are like I was and not being taught any short or long-term strategy by your upline or company, you need to Quickly Run Away, like I did, and find a mentor and strategy!
Really, I’m not joking!
Here is what it comes down to, you have 2 choices: you can either:
- Develop the strategy yourself, which is going to take a lot of money, time, & trial and error, or
- You can find a mentor who has a proven record, has already figured out and teaches the strategy you need to be successful in network marketing, and then model their strategy.
For myself, I was tried of reinvent the wheel. Over the years I attended my company big events, regional events, drove thousands of miles and ended up $23,519 in the hole.
What I finally found out it’s much easier to follow a proven process from a successful networker who’s making money and doing it in a way that I wanted to do. The strategy, which worked best for me included using online recruiting methods, which fit with my contrary old school attitude.
In summary: find a mentor or company that gives you a concrete strategy for recruiting your first person, making your first sale, and eventually reaching your long-term goals - especially if you want to recruit successful network marketers into your business.

You want to teach your strategy to your downline so they can go out, succeed, and make you some money in the process and the process should be simple, but not necessarily easy.
Now, recall that CPA I mentioned before said, “it’s not selling, it’s sharing.”
Even though this was my first network marketing experience, I thought it sounded simplistic, moronic, and not authentic.
After all, it took a lot of selling and convincing before I signed up, so why was he telling us we didn’t need to learn to do the same?
In hindsight, I know why.
- Issue 1: The CPA assumed we were dumb, or weak, so he made the process of building the business sound easy, because he didn’t want to scare us away by telling us the truth. (e.g. we had to learn real skills.)
- Issue 2: As I’ve seen in other network marketing business since he was not doing what he preached. He approached his business in one way (skill based), while telling us to do something different. This meant we couldn’t duplicate, even if we wanted to, because catering to weakness doesn’t duplicate.
As a leader, I use every single process and tactic I teach to help my team succeed.
I give my team the exact same tools I use, and I’m constantly testing, refining, and improving my methods. And if anything changes, I let them know.
That’s the responsibility of a leader.
Besides, developing strategies isn’t the team’s responsibility; it’s the leader’s.
Don’t get me wrong every strategy or tactic does not have to be a “home run” the first time it’s used by a new rep. It just has to deliver results that can be quantified, assessed, and improved upon over time.
It is highly likely your first time implementing a strategy won’t go well and you have to be OK with that, as long as you are committed to improving and learning.
Tanya McDowall, was the first Old School network marketer I ever learned from who actually taught me an effective strategy for building offline, without the internet.
That was in my second brush with this profession. What she taught me was how to market my business and if the company had not gone public and told her she was not able to use those strategies to build a business I would have continued to have massive success in that company.
Tanya assumed you were willing to actually do the work, learn the skills and are strong enough to persevere, the same way I do today.

When you treat the strategy you’re learning as seriously as you would the skills to be an Air Force combat crew member, you gain experience.
With experience comes understanding, that is you start learning things you just can’t learn in a course, audio book, or training.
Here’s the simple truth: if you’re thinking, “I want to make some money now, now, now, now,” you’re setting yourself up for failure.
I don’t mean to be cruel, but “get-rich-quick schemes” are just that: schemes.
They don’t create sustainable, predictable success because the success is not based on the development of skills, which take time to develop.
Until you treat network marketing, like a pilot treat a combat mission, you won’t succeed.
And you’ll aggravate your leaders, because personally, I worked VERY hard to develop and learn the strategies I teach. I feel disrespected when people think I can teach them a trick for making high incomes overnight.
A real strategy is not a trick because it requires practice and time, so it eventually it becomes easy. (More on this in step #5.)
(And here’s the truth - going to school, getting good grades, finding a good company, and working hard is a 40+ year path that leads to a 95% failure rate, so what if it takes you 3-6 months to be effective)
So if you’re serious about this whole network marketing thing and you want to be a leader yourself, you’ve got to be committed, gain experience, develop an appreciation for nuance and develop DEPTH of understanding, which is impossible to attain in any other way.
This is critical; because it helps you develop strategies that fit your individual goals and personality.
Fundamentally, everyone building offline or online has the same basic foundation.
However, every person has a different approach, style, and tactic, because over time, they all come to occupy a slightly different space in this profession.
As you implement a strategy, you learn to customize it to include your strengths & weaknesses and what happens - it becomes your own.
In summary: you gain experience with repetition and you get depth of understanding, and eventually you start modifying tactics and processes so your strategies fit you, your team, your company, and your product.
Once you have a strategy, an understanding, and the nuances from following steps 1-3, you achieve success in your business and can then teach others what you know through video, Facebook Live, blogging, e-mails, and so on.
By creating a community and communicating with people every single day you’ll “pay it forward,” and not just for your downline, but to the profession at large.
This does 2 things for you…
- People notice you’re giving value and other people are benefiting, and your following grows.
- As you build your fan base, you create your own personal brand and become a leader, who rises above any one company or product. This is key to the final step: “A Money Making Machine” income.
In summary: Once you “pay it forward” and develop a following by providing great value that helps others, you develop a following of people who want to learn more and more from you.
That’s how you create an empire: a loyal community that loves you, and knows you will lead them to good fortune.
When you become a force you get the ability to sell and recruit network marketers en masse.
OK what are you talking about?
You are able to recruit a lot of people and sell a product to a lot of people, with the push of a button.
That push of a button can be sending on an email, starting a webinar, publishing a blogpost, or whatever method you choose.
In fact these days you can even create a call to action doing Facebook Live or Zoom and people will buy your new course or fill out the form to sign up for your opportunity.
Because they trust you plus your community provides you credibility.
Because you paid it forward and have skills you developed that others would like to learn.
Many old school leaders miss #4 and #5. They miss the part about building a community beyond their specific network marketing company.
So if anything goes wrong with their company, as has happened to me twice, or their team, their only avenue is to start all over again from scratch. Most don’t have a “plan B.”
You want to be in a position where you’re not dependent on anyone but yourself and your own brand, regardless of how awesome your company is at this moment.
That’s why step #4, building a community, is so important. It allows you to do step #5 which is becoming a force that no one can stop and you’re able to recruit network marketers en masse, at will.
