This one will raise some emotions and before you answer the question and jump into the “NO” camp…
Let’s talk about the ethics of this issue. You may actually change your mind.
Just a few weeks ago, I received complaints from a leader I've known for years in our network marketing profession.
This leader was very upset that his downline was seeing my posts and ads on social media promoting marketing training and blog articles on how to build a business online.
His reps where seeing these posts and articles because Facebook allows me, and anyone for that matter, to target and promote information to people with a specific interest.
What do you mean?
Well let’s talk about an example, if you are a fan of a certain “Public Figure,” “Personal Brand,” or follow a certain “author”…
And someone knows have to target that market...
Facebook will show your ad to these people.
This is called targeting a market and allows you to attract John Maxwell followers to your business instead of your broke negative friends, coworkers, and relatives?
So, hold on to that thought for a moment…
Why am I receiving complaints from the leader I've known for years?
Well he is still using “old school’ techniques that throw a wide net to prospect, teaches this to his team who aren't able to duplicate his system and are looking for an alternative.
Let’s be honest on the ethics brought up by my friend complaining about my advertising...
He thinks it is unethical for anyone to advertise to his customers and downline.
Because it makes it harder for him to keep his people indoctrinated into the old school way of building, such as...
You get the picture.
He's in his “old school” comfort zone and can’t see the benefit of teaching a 21st century approach to prospecting new reps or customers into a network marketing business.
He does not understand and is not willing to learn so he can teach his team the passive online strategies such as “attraction marketing”.
And guess what?
His team is looking for those online lead generation strategies, which literally results in the passive generation of leads, customers, and even distributors for their business.
Last month alone, I literally generated over 100 leads per week and 5 serious people who are looking for an alternative to old school techniques that are not work for them.
They need a mentor to help them build a business using 21st century strategies, not 50 year old industrial age techniques.
Besides me, there are literally hundreds of emerging leaders who develop 6- and 7-figure incomes by building their business using the internet.
There are others, such as my friend, who are not building online and don’t like the fact that we are educating the network marketing profession on 21st century options.
It's very simple.
My friend doesn’t know how to generate prospects online, so introducing new strategies to his downline undermines his authority.
After all, leaders understand and teach alternatives.
So he stays in his comfort zone, sticks to what he knows, and tells his team this online stuff is just a “distraction” which is code for…
“I don’t understand these methods so I’ll just pretend they don’t exist.”
When I got started in network marketing back in 2009, I used old school techniques to build my business and I succeeded for a period of time building a small team…. but quite frankly, I hated building my business this way
It was time consuming, and I got tired of chasing friends, family, and coworkers who had no interest in network marketing.
It was almost impossible to get my team to duplicate old school techniques because they also were getting little results.
So after building this way for several years I got worn out, feed up, and was looking for an alternative.
Can you relate?
To honest at one point in my career I had to actively look for a different company and leadership who had the tools in place to build a massive online business.
Like others in our profession who are being taught only the “old school” methods, I was looking hard for alternatives.
In fact a member of my team and my most successful downline introduced me to a mentorship program through her blog post that lead me to uncover the extremely effective way she was building her business online using “Attraction Marketing”.
This mentorship program and the incredible mentors I have had the privilege to meet and work with have taught me the “right” way to build a business online, without having to:
Within 2 months of starting the program I was able to generate a consistent flow of leads and had people contacting me about my company.
Within 4 months, I was sponsoring people into my network marketing business and had created a following on Facebook of over 5,000 people.
As you can see the success I’ve had so far is proof attraction marketing works, but what does this have to do with stealing someone’s downline?
Like many old school taught downline, I was looking and found mentors whose could teach me knowledge derived from over a 100 years of tested and proven marketing and sales strategies – now being applied towards the Internet – referred to as “Direct Response Marketing” or “Attraction Marketing”.
Here’s how it works…
The grounding principle of “Attraction Marketing” is different than the old school techniques you’ve been taught about promoting your business and most important is…
“Everyone is NOT Your Prospect”
In fact, trying to sell your product or opportunity to EVERYONE, when marketing, will actually end up costing you an insane amount of wasted time, money, rejection, and absolute frustration, which will kill a business… any kind of business – not just network marketing.
I don’t know about you but when I got started in network marketing I was told never to pre-judge people. I found out this was absolutely the wrong way to build a business.
Instead, attraction marketing – whether you’re paying for ads or prospecting free on social media – is about targeting people who are most likely to want your offer, because they have a need or problem, which your product, service, or opportunity solves.
This is what makes online marketing via social media so effective – people have already told these social platforms what their interests and problems are via their searches, views, posts, and other behaviors.
So if this is the case, you may be asking, how do I find people interested in what I have?
Well in attraction marketing, there are actually 5 primary market segments you may choose to go after.
There are 5 potential target markets I use but I am only going after 3 of them right now.
Why? Simple it is easier, faster, and less complicated than the other 2.
Recruiting New Reps:
Here’s where we get into the controversial issue of stealing someone’s downline.
Taking customers from other competitors is a normal business practice used by the business world every day.
Example: If you are a long time Chevy owner and after several years of owing Chevys that don't meet your expectations you may start looking for an alternative automobile. So when Ford advertises it gets your attention, you look, evaluate the automobile, find it meets your needs and you become a Ford person. That is the way the market works!
I choose to direct my marketing and advertising first and foremost towards network marketers or direct sales reps, (e.g. people that have already bought what I sell or something similar.)
Because they have already demonstrated a willingness to BUY in an opportunity and invest in themselves via books, training, and events. Plus they are positive about our profession!
I don’t have to convince them what I do is good or bad, because they are actively participating in it. They want to earn an extra income and have already paid for programs in the past.
In other words, they already buy what I sell.
My job as a marketer and leader in the industry is not to push my opportunity in their face and insist they join my team. Believe me I’ve done this in the past and it does not work.
What a knowledgeable networker does is “attraction marketing”.
They demonstrate their value and leadership skills, why it would be beneficial to join their team, and the end results is people are attracted to their business.
If you do a search online for top network marketers, you’ll see that many of them have training sites, which attract networkers to them.
Many are offering pure generic training like this blog article with no agenda other than to add value, just like I'm doing now.
In fact these are the emerging 21st Century leaders in our network marketing profession.
They provide value that allows people to benefit from their training and leadership as either a team member on their teams or as a networker building their own organization.
This approach provides a path for someone, who is looking to change teams, to join your team without chasing or using high pressure old school sponsoring tactics.
But more importantly, when someone chooses to make the move and join a new team and company, you have the opportunity to have them join your team.
Now let's be honest, would you call that steal someone’s downline?
I call it being a leader who offers value and, attracts people to him or her across a profession.
It’s not stealing if someone freely chooses to work with someone who they truly believe is better able to help them build a business, in the way they want to build a business.
In fact, let’s be honest one reason you found this blog post is you likely saw someone share this post on social media, which caused you to take an interest in growing your business online and maybe eventually, you’ll want to stay connected to get more detailed training, just like I did.
Truthfully, my post was probably shown to you by Facebook, because they knew you had an interest or was active in network marketing or direct sales.
It’s like reading a person’s mind and you can have it available to you.
Or if you enjoy building a business using old school technique that is perfectly OK also.
The point is the choice is yours.
This strategy is available to everybody, but few know it!
I didn’t know it but was actively looking for a viable alternative to build my network marketing business online.

Now let’s talk about customers, finding people who already buy what you sell is not about targeting other networkers via social media. It’s about targeting people who already buy the same or similar retail product like the ones you sell.
And if you’ve not getting results with network marketing, leading with your product and targeting people who already have demonstrated a willingness to invest in products similar to yours, is actually a great beginner strategy because it doesn’t require that you be some sort of big guru or even be successful as a networker.
You just need to demonstrate your product can produce the results or better results, than the products your prospect is already using.
As an example, in the weight loss industry, the best customers are usually those who have bought other weight loss solutions.
Plus Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc., allows you to easily find and target people who are already buying your products.
This market is similar to Target Market #1, but there is one key difference – people are aware of products or opportunities that solve their problem, but have not yet to bought or invested.
That said, the strategy for targeting them is almost identical to what was described before…
Recruiting New Reps & Attracting Customers:
This is someone who may have been introduced to your particular opportunity or product, but are in research mode and haven’t taken the step to buy product or joint the opportunity.
Not only that but many of these people are high quality prospects.
However, what I’ve found is you need to beware of the tire kickers who have a hard time making a decision or sponsor shop. (BTW, is it stealing if your marketing attracts this person to your business instead of a competitor?)
You target and find these prospects via the same social media channels we mentioned in Target Market #1, because their interests are the same.
What’s even better is you can automate your online marketing systems, as we teach in this free course.
You let the system do the selling, and the sifting and sorting for you, until they are ready to make a buying decision.
If you do engage with these folks, focus on their issues, problems, or desired results.
In other words what they want in their lives.
Also highlight the cost of in-action to their financial or personal well-being.
In other words want they don’t want in their lives.
The truth is no one cares about your company or product.
They care about you helping them solve their problems and improve their lives.
This market are people who are aware of a problem they have (i.e. they need more money, want to look younger, hate their job, have no retirement, etc.), but are not yet aware of a product or opportunity that can help them.
Recruiting New Reps:
To find people in this market, who are interested in your opportunity, requires you target people who have demonstrated an interest in books about entrepreneurship or escaping the rat race such as:
Someone who is a fan of authors or public figures like the above, likely are influenced to start looking for an opportunity to fire their boss or start a business or simply make an extra income from home.
They are keenly aware they don’t want their job and have an interest in something else, but don’t know what that something else is yet.
That’s where you come in!
Same idea applies here.
You target people who have expressed an interest in solving a problem in their lives, such as “how to lose weight”, “how to make my skin look younger”, “what vacation options are available”, etc.
Normally, these interests are revealed by what people are reading, watching, or who they following on social media.
As before, your marketing message should focus on the issue, problem, or desired result they want for their lives and how your product can help them get what they want!
So let go back to the ethical question of steal someone’s downline or customer.
As you can see, we weren’t actually talking about harassing or poaching other people’s organizations at all.
That would be self-serving and unethical, because your true interest is not in helping others, but in helping yourself.
The purpose of this article is to reveal how:
YOU can choose to create an online presence and attract new reps and customers to you, by showcasing the VALUE of what you offer, so people can come to YOU and choose YOU.
Just like choosing that new Ford over the Chevy -- remember.
People on their own, will choose what you have to offer once you learn how to target the best audience and understand how to market your business.
This is a normal day to day practice of all successful businesses.
So will people in other teams or organizations choose to go with you? YES!
Well the reason is they saw you as a stronger leader who can help them solve a problem that is not being solved where they are now.
That is what “attraction marketing” is and what this Online Recruiting Training is all about – attracting people who like and care about what you have to offer.
This also begs a question.
