5 Laws to Set Your Business on a Course to Fly High and Fast

Your network marketing business is a like a properly executed flight plan.

Many of you know I spent years as an aviator with the United States Air Force. So hear me out….

Imagine for a moment you are sitting in the cockpit of an Air Force bomber, you are the pilot in command, and getting ready to execute a critical mission.

I’m going to tell you from personal experience takeoff is a demanding part of the mission and can be extremely stressful. You’ve got to accelerate to the proper speed to lift off the runway, be mindful of all the elements of takeoff, and pull the yoke/stick back at the exact right moment so you leave the runway and begin the accent.

Once you’re in the air, gears and flaps are up, and you have executed the Standard Instrument Departure (SID) you arrive at cruising altitude.

It takes a tremendous amount of fuel and effort to reach this point but once you are at cruising altitude things change for the better.

Why? Well at altitude the air is a lot thinner and you have less resistance. This creates an ideal flying environment, optimizes fuel economy, and flying speed.

You have overcome the initial inertia of takeoff and climb, created the momentum of flight, and can now go on autopilot.

Now Colonel, think about how similar this is to a network marketing business…

Getting your network marketing business off the ground can be a real challenge…there are so many forces weighing you down and keeping you from gaining that momentum to reach the higher altitudes.

In network marketing, as with taking off an airplane, you need to pick up speed and have enough lift to start gaining altitude. There are challenges pulling and pushing you, making it difficult to keep a balanced flight plan.

But once you’ve reached “altitude”, as with an airplane, things get MUCH easier.

You’ve got the systems, technology, and people in place to handle the tasks. The flight plan is being executed, you’ve got everything dialed in, and you can place your business on autopilot.

That’s when you know you’ve reached a “high” level of success.

Sound good?

So, how do you get there? How do you achieve autopilot success, where your network marketing business is running itself and you can actually enjoy the freedom to pursue your passions, spend more time with your family and friends, or take that dream vacation you have always wanted?

On a mission, crew members, use extensive checklists to accomplish each and every step of a flight…

In network marketing there are recognized authorities who have already established the checklists and charted a mission to the top.

As my Blue Diamond up line says “success leaves clues.”

The 5 Laws to Successfully Fly High and Fly Fast

Written in 2007, The Go Giver, by Bob Burg and John Mann, is a modern-day business story in the same vain as Who Moved My Cheese?

These 5 Laws are a bit like the principles of aviation that chart a course of mission success:

Ignoring the laws keeps your network marketing business on the ground, harnessing their power, allows your business to fly high & fast.

In The Go Giver, Joe, our central character goes on a five day journey to meet his mentor and leaders to discover these five laws:

  1. The Law of Value.
  2. The Law of Compensation.
  3. The Law of Influence.
  4. The Law of Authenticity.
  5. The Law of Receptivity.

So what did Joe find out on his mission?

“Our true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.”

On day one of Joe’s mission his mentor takes him to lunch at an expensive Italian restaurant, with exquisite food. He meets the owner/chef, Ernesto, who started out as an immigrant with no money. Ernesto saved his money from odd jobs to purchase a street vendor license and buy a hot dog stand.

Ernesto gave his customers an extraordinary experience so people came from all over for the experience not just the hot dog. His hot dog stand was voted in a leading magazine as the #1 outdoor dining experience in the city.

Word of mouth is powerful and his hot dog stand attracted business leaders as regulars. The value experienced of these venture capitalists led to a partnership, the funding for his Italian restaurant, and contracts for millions in real estate.

All from a hot dog stand.

So let me ask: whether you’re in affiliate marketing, network marketer, home business owner, or online business owner, your goal is to make more sales to earn more income, right?


This might sound strange: but at first you’ve got to forget the money.

If you want more money in your life, focus on helping more people. Give more value than expected. Give more value than anyone else is giving. Teach your team how to build a business.

Personal example: As I began the process of personal branding the drive to develop valuable content for my audience was a key factor even though it was not producing a lot of income. So as the business progressed I ask myself what’s the one thing I could do, that allows me to stand out and make a difference in people’s lives?

For me, it was giving of my time and caring for my people. I had been an Air Force commander several times during my Air Force career. What I learned was the most successful commanders placed their people first. By placing their people first they added more value to the individual and the overall team. So I took these lessons of command and use them to build a large following of people who wanted the information I was providing.

By placing people first over yourself, you have more value to give.

“Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.”

Let’s meet Nicole in The Go Giver. Her conference room looked like a children’s day care center with easels, paints, clay, paper, and crayons. Nicole turned her teaching skills into a platform to train business leaders using children’s activities.

She taught how to tap into the creative learning that worked so well in her classroom. Then she partnered with a computer expert, took her training beyond the office, and created an online program. This allowed her to scale up and reach millions of customers, while still giving exceptional value.

Nicole created leverage to increase her compensation. Because the more lives you touch, the more money you will make.

Personal example: When I first started my online journey I had run out of an audience and had no classroom to share my ideas. Then I was introduced to attraction marketing and began the process of  scaling my business with the goal to reach millions of customers. I’m still working towards that goal but because of good mentorship my audience has grown every month, month after month to well over 3,000 who like what I provide and, like Nicole, I’ve turned my skills into a classroom.

There is power in leveraging people who take your message and duplicate it.

“Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.”

Remember our hero Joe? In the book he is faced with losing a big account because he can’t deliver what they need. Faced with this failure, Joe finds himself calling a competitor who had the ability to serve the account better. To Joe’s surprise, his competitor called him later, asked for help on a project. As a result Joe landed the biggest deal of his life. His competitor has now become his ally, all from putting other’s needs first.

Think about how you help your customers and team get what they really want, not just what you want.

Find ways to connect people to other people and resources, whether or not those resources come from you.

Like throwing a pebble in a lake, you create a wider circle of influence.

Personal example: I was working with one of my distributors. After working with her for a period of time I saw she needed help and at this point in my profession I did not have the skills to help her. So I sent her to another leader in the company so she could learn the skills she wanted to learn. The results were amazing she hit the leaderboard every month for 8 months straight!

I was not looking for a return payment; her success was great to see. But because of what I had done I was introduced to a mentorship program that has placed me on the path to a 7-figure income – the law of influence at work.

As you freely give more value, to more people your success multiplies. Place others interests above your own. Value every person. Treat everyone like a VIP because they are.

“Instead of trying ineffectively to use all the selling techniques you’ve been taught, consider that the most valuable skill you have to offer is yourself, who YOU are. In other words, be real.”

Joe was sent to hear a speech by a famous real estate broker. He was failing even following all the selling techniques he’d been taught.

He was ready to give up. He needed to earn money but had not made a single sale in two years. He decided to keep his appointment with one last client. He had nothing to lose, so he just relaxed, got to know the client, had fun and got the sale. His career exploded after that. He stopped pretending to be someone other than himself. He got real.

People are less interested in the system, the training or even your company’s product or service, than what you bring to the table. How much more effective can you be by just being yourself?

People buy YOU first, and then your company, product, or service.

Stop being like that mentor you are trying to mirror. You’ve got to be yourself and share YOU with the world. Ultimately you have to find your own voice. Being real will attract those people who will relate to you, who connect to you, and who you can develop a lifelong friendship and business relationship with.

“The key to effectively giving is to stay open to receiving.”

On the last day of his journey, Joe was alone with his mentor. His mentor told him to breathe out, without taking a breath in. (Try it yourself…It’s impossible.)

Joe had to find a way each day to implement the laws he was given one by one. On the last day he had to integrate those laws and really receive the assistance he’d been given.

Are you willing to be open and receptive to all the gifts in your life? Are you willing to accept abundance, to receive money? It might sound strange, but many people have negative emotions surrounding receiving money.

Many of us grew up hearing “it is better to give than to receive,” which actually blocks the flow of giving if you aren’t also able to receive.

Understand what is holding you back from receiving. Allow yourself to be open and willing to receive – for many, this is perhaps the most critical law to invite into your life.

Let’s Recap…

The Laws say to give more value; help as many people as possible on a giant scale get what they want; connect people to resources beyond what you have to help them; be real; and keep the flow open between giving and receiving, like breathing in and out.


  1. The law of Value, give more than you take in payment.
  2. The law of Compensation, your income is determined by how many people you serve.
  3. The law of Influence, your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.
  4. The law of Authenticity, the most valuable gift you can offer is the gift of yourself.
  5. The law of Receptivity, the key to effectively giving is to stay open to receiving.

So what’s next?

Earlier I mentioned these 5 Laws are a bit like the principles of aviation that chart a course to mission success. When harnessed, they cause your network marketing business to fly high & fast.

As with all things in life there is a catch:

Just knowing these Laws isn’t enough.

You can sit around all day and talk about the physics of lift and drag until you’re blue in the face, but until you’re sitting in that cockpit, following the checklist, and giving those engines full throttle, you’re not getting off the tarmac so you can reach cruising altitude.

Right? Theory is one thing. Implementation is another. There’s knowing the path, and there’s walking the path.

Every industry is a little different…

Yet it’s universally true that your audience is what gives your network marketing business wings.

Think about this:

Without an audience, you can’t apply any of the 5 Laws

They ALL require an audience!

You can’t give value without an audience; you can’t serve and receive compensation without an audience; you can’t influence or place other’s interests first without an audience; you can’t be authentic without an audience to perceive your authenticity; and finally, you certainly can’t allow receptivity and abundance into your life without an audience.

But in today’s world we are lucky because our perfect audience is only a few clicks away.

It’s literally never been easier in all of human history to quickly build an ultra-targeted highly responsive audience, looking for the exact solution your network marketing business provides.

It doesn’t matter what you’re selling.
